About
the indigenous people of Chile
The
indigenous people of Chile live in the poorest regions of the
country and are the poorest sector of the society. They
recieve very little education and have low literacy rates.
They
mainly live off the land through agriculture, hunting and gathering.
They are also a society of shamanism. Indigenous
medicine through a Shaman is still frequently practiced.
Indigenous people in Chile are located in the Magallanes provence,
the northern regions and the southern regions of Chile. They
account for 598,000 (4.2%) of the total population of the country.
The
Mapuche, the largest and most organized group of indigenous people,
comprise over 90% of the indigenous population. Since
the early 1800s, they have lived in reservations established
by the government, south of the capital, Santiago, or in urban
areas.
