 Professional Student Sponsorship Program
A journey of faith and hope

The indigenous people of Chile receive very little education and have low literacy rates.

Statistics gathered by the national census of 2001, reveal that the Mapuche rural population showed a functional illiteracy rate of 57%.

A very insignificant portion of the population has completed high school education. There are only 43 schools in the area to meet the educational needs. Less than 50% of the younger population, under 24, have access to education.

Another reason why literacy rate is so low is due to the economic hardships, which enable them to leave home and complete their education in different areas, such as Chol-Chol, Carahue, Nueva Imperial and Temuko.

Students contribute to their households, and many of them hold jobs, but in that part of the country, work is incompatible with education. They must help their families and often times drop out of school in order to be

Nevertheless, in spite of all the contradictions, these “star students” continue dreaming of a better education and opportunities:

*Jose Pablo Painen Trangol: Lonko family lineage. He has completed high school. He is in his second year studying graphic design at the Institute Daimen in Temuko.

Lucia Huiquiman: Mapuche lineage. Her father has passed away and she only has her living mother. Lucia has worked as a servant from seventh grade to the present time. In March of this year, she will be going to the Inacap Institute from Temuko to specialize in Construction.

Jessica Painenao: Mapuche lineage. She has finished high school. She will be attending Accountant Institute of Temuko to specialize as an accountant.

Pachamama Conservation has been sponsoring these kids since they started high school.

We have seen and felt their challenges. We have seen them grow, and become stronger and more knowledgeable. We have experienced this journey with them, and we have absolute certainty that they are going to achieve their goals. Our organization’s effort, are driven by the understanding that education is the best tool to overcome poverty. Education won’t only provide a better quality of life to each of the student’s families, but also promote development and motivation to achieve higher standards of living within their own communities.

If your heart has a the desire of helping these beautiful Mapuche children to go on with their education, please make donations to:
